The Philadelphia Phillies acquired second baseman Luis Arráez ahead of the MLB trade deadline on Monday. Arráez was put into the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals, batting fourth and playing second.
He has been adamant about wanting to be a second baseman, and his inclusion in the lineup forced Philadelphia to switch around its defensive look, resulting in Bryce Harper moving back to right field for the first time since 2022.
The newest Phillies hitter paid early dividends in his debut. Arráez came to the plate in the bottom of the first inning with runners on first and second. He sent a single into center field, scoring Trea Turner.
Arráez has become known for his consistently high batting average. He is a four-time All-Star and won the batting title in the National League three consecutive years from 2022 to 2024 when he was with the Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
Heading into his Phillies debut, Arráez was slashing .324/.360/.440 in 464 plate appearances over 105 games. He is not known for power, with only four home runs, but is one of the most consistent hitters in the league, showing off his skills to the Philadelphia faithful in his first at-bat with the franchise.
Arráez was acquired on Monday from the San Francisco Giants. Philadelphia got the second baseman and reliever Caleb Kilian, while San Francisco added pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair.
