Padres beat the clock to acquire Casey Mize from Tigers, who part with their top 2 pitchers before the trade deadline

Padres beat the clock to acquire Casey Mize from Tigers, who part with their top 2 pitchers before the trade deadline

A season after beating the rival Guardians in the wild-card round of their second consecutive trip to the playoffs, the Detroit Tigers were hoping to build on their postseason success in 2026.

Instead, on Monday, they confirmed the waving of their white flag by trading their second All-Star pitcher in three days.

The Tigers and Padres beat the trade-deadline buzzer Monday in a deal that sent All-Star starter Casey Mize to San Diego for a package to Detroit featuring the Padres’ top pitching prospect, Kash Mayfield.

The move arrived on the heels of Saturday’s blockbuster that sent two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a package of prospects in a deal that shook the baseball world.

At this point, trading Mize made sense

There was little doubt remaining regarding Detroit’s priorities after the Skubal trade. The Mize deal just hammered the point home: Detroit’s shifted away from competing for the playoffs with a 5.5-game deficit in the AL Central and a 2.5-game deficit in the race for the final AL wild-card spot.

Whether that was the right call is certainly up for debate. It’s reasonable for a Tigers fan to look at a 2.5-game wild-card hole and wonder: why exactly did my team just part with arguably the best pitcher in baseball?

But once that was done, trading Mize only made sense. If you’re focusing on the future, don’t do it halfway. Mize is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and Detroit now has a promising prospect in Mayfield for the future.

Tigers fans can look to rebuilt farm system for comfort

Mayfield is a 21-year-old left-hander who was ranked as the No. 2 prospect and the No. 1 pitcher in San Diego’s farm system by MLB Pipeline. With the deal done, he’s now ranked as Detroit’s sixth-best prospect.

Outfieler Zyhir Hope, right-handed pitcher River Ryan and right-handed pitcher Brady Smith rate at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 15, respectively, in the same Tigers’ prospect rankings. They were all acquired from the Dodgers in the Skubal deal.

There’s not much immediate solace for a fanbase that just watched short-term hope get demolished is such wrenching fashion. But for Tigers fans seeking it, a reloaded farm system could provide some comfort.

Just don’t look at the Padres and general manager A.J. Preller if you’re among them. They’re hopelessly out of the NL West race at 11 games behind the Dodgers. And, like the Tigers, they’re on the outside looking in at their league’s wild-card race at one game behind the NL’s final spot as of Monday.

Given those parameters, they decided that pulling the trigger on Casey Mize for a run at the postseason that would feature the Dodgers in their bracket was the right call.
