Columbus Clippers 6, Toledo Mud Hens 3 (box)
Toledo dropped a fifth game agaisnt Columbus on Sunday behind a rough start from Carl Edwards Jr. The Clippers take the week, 5-1.
Edwards hasn’t been very good as a starter for Toledo this year. With today’s five earned runs, he’s at a 9.25 ERA through seven starts with the Mud Hens. He’s only at 6.06 as a reliever, but the numbers are just all around bad. That’s what you get from a Sunday starter at age 34, though. The Mets DFA’d him earlier this year, and it’s hard to imagine him being with Detroit much longer.
Toledo just left him out there to work through five straight batters reaching in the second. He recovered with a double play and retired 12 of the next 14 batters he faced. At least there’s a silver lining for him there.
The Mud Hens’ offense didn’t provide much offense behind Edwards, scoring just one run until the eighth inning. Gage Workman led off the third with a solo home run, but no one else could get anything going despite having runners on in each of the first five innings.
Luke Taggart got lucky in the sixth, getting two outs on bad baserunning. The leadoff man tried to stretch a single into a double and was hosed at second, and the second batter was caught stealing to end the inning. Taggart wasn’t as fortunate in the seventh. Again, both of the first two batters reached base, and a one-out single made it 6-1.
Toledo finally made something happen in the eighth, with Jace Jung scoring on a Brett Callahan ground out. Cal Stevenson scored in the ninth on a single from Workman. The tying run came to the plate in Max Anderson, but he got a little under it, ending the game. Oh yeah, Troy Watson worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth.

Erie SeaWolves 6, Akron RubberDucks 4 (box)
A big five-run fourth inning was all Erie needed to take the series agaisnt the Akron RubberDucks, 4-2, winning 6-4 on Sunday.
Max Alba had a decent start, retiring the first six batters in order. He gave up a solo homer in the third and a single later in the inning, but that was all he had to deal with until he was pulled in the fourth. Johan Simon got the last out of the fourth, and then the offense fired up.
Andrew Jenkins led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. E.J. Exposito and Andrew Sojka hit back-to-back singles, the latter bringing Jenkins around to tie the game. Stephen Hrustich blew it wide open with a three-run homer two batters later.
Viandel Pena joined in on the fun with his own homer, going back-to-back with Hrustich.
Seth Stephenson also had a single and stole his 50th base of the season, but he didn’t end up scoring after Akron changed pitchers.
That long inning hurt Simon a bit, though. He let the first two batters reach in the fifth and saw both of them score. Still, Erie led 5-3 at that point.
Tyler Owens was next out of the bullpen. He retired six of the seven batters he faced and struck out the side in the sixth.
Sojka got an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Jenkins with a sac fly. Yoniel Curet and Trevin Michael closed out the final two innings. Michael gave up a run, but he had a cushion to work with.

Gm 1: Beloit Sky Carp 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 5 (box)
They played two in Comstock Park today thanks to some rain on Saturday. West Michigan came in needing just one win to claim the series, but neither half of the straight doubleheader went the Whitecaps’ way.
Game one was certainly winnable with Jackson Jobe getting the start. The Whitecaps loaded the bases with no outs, but a line drive double play back to the pitcher ruined things. A third walk reloaded the bases for Jackson Strong, but he struck out to end the inning.
The second inning went better. Again, the Whitecaps loaded the bases with no outs, and Woody Hadeen made it 1-0 with a sac fly to left field. Bryce Rainer singled in another run, and then Izaac Pacheco hit a three-run homer, putting West Michigan ahead by five.
Unfortunately, the Whitecaps only had one more hit over the next five innings, and the pitching didn’t hold up after Jobe left the game.
Speaking of Jobe, he was solid through four frames, but the even-numbered innings were a bit bumpy. Jobe loaded the bases in the second, walking a pair after giving up a one-out double, but he buckled down to escape the jam. Beloit scored off him in the fourth, hitting three singles in the inning, but one run is fine.
The stuff looks good, but Jobe is still building his stamina back up and working out the kinks on the breaking ball. His heater is touching 99 mph, though, which is nice to see.
Preston Howey gave up a run in the fifth, walking the leadoff man and giving up back-to-back singles before recording an out. More trouble came in the sixth, when Beloit strung together four consecutive hits off him, including a two-run single and two-run homer to take the lead.
Ryan Harvey got the final five outs for West Michigan, giving up another home run in the process, but the offense was lifeless at this point. Oh, well.

Game two went worse than the first… Only one run on two hits and two walks from the Whitecaps. Both walks came in the first inning. Woody Hadeen stole third and came home on a bad throw from the catcher. Cristian Santana singled in the second and Samuel Gil led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. Yikes.
Both of Beloit’s runs came in the fourth. West Michigan starter Connor Fenlong was pretty solid, working around three hits over the first three innings, but a leadoff walk and trio of singles gave him the loss.
Moises Rodriguez, Juanmi Vasquez and Logan Berrier each pitched an inning in relief. They all dealt with one baserunner, but none of them gave up runs.
Ultimate getaway game(s) energy.
