Wilfred Benítez began his climb toward a third world championship on August 1, 1980, stopping rugged contender Tony Chiaverini after eight rounds at the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada. The former WBC welterweight champion had moved to the junior middleweight division in pursuit of another title opportunity, while Chiaverini hoped an upset would move him into championship contention.
Benítez had already captured world titles at light welterweight and welterweight before his loss to Sugar Ray Leonard nine months earlier. Rather than remain at 147 pounds, the Puerto Rican technician pursued a fresh route at 154. Chiaverini arrived with a reputation for durability and relentless pressure after sharing the ring with several elite fighters, giving Benítez another credible test during his rebuilding campaign.
Chiaverini opened aggressively, working to trap Benítez against the ropes and attack the body. His pressure produced success during the second round, but Benítez steadily solved the attack with his jab, footwork, and razor-sharp timing. By the middle rounds, he dictated the pace, catching Chiaverini with crisp counters whenever the challenger pushed forward.
The fight swung decisively in the sixth. Benítez landed a looping right hand, followed by a succession of clean right leads, left hooks, and combinations that repeatedly snapped Chiaverini’s head back. The punishment continued through the seventh and eighth rounds, opening a cut across the bridge of Chiaverini’s nose while all three judges had Benítez comfortably in front.
Recognizing the one-sided nature of the contest, trainer Angelo Dundee refused to allow Chiaverini to continue after the eighth round. Referee Ferd Hernandez recorded the result as a technical knockout. No world title was at stake, and contemporary reports did not publish confirmed purse figures or an official attendance, although the nationally televised card drew a strong crowd inside Caesars Palace.
The win kept Benítez’s comeback on course. He defeated Pete Ranzany later that year before challenging WBC junior middleweight champion Maurice Hope in May 1981. Benítez knocked Hope out to become boxing’s youngest three-division world champion at the time, further cementing his reputation as one of the sport’s finest defensive craftsmen. Chiaverini remained respected for his toughness but gradually slipped from the contender ranks before retiring a few years later.
