Mike Tyson Solves Tony Tucker To Unify Titles

Mike Tyson finalized one of boxing’s most significant championship collections on August 1, 1987, when he defeated Tony Tucker by a 12-round unanimous decision at the Las Vegas Hilton in Paradise, Nevada. Before a crowd of 7,419, the 21-year-old WBA and WBC champion captured Tucker’s IBF title to become the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion in boxing history.

The matchup, billed as The Ultimate, served as the championship finale of HBO’s Heavyweight World Series. Both fighters weighed 221 pounds, while referee Mills Lane officiated the first heavyweight championship contested over 12 rounds after the WBC reduced title fights from the traditional 15-round distance.

Many anticipated another Tyson knockout. Tyson (30-0, 27 KOs) had overwhelmed nearly every opponent placed before him. Tucker (34-0, 29 KOs) brought the IBF championship plus a six-foot-five frame that many believed gave him the best chance yet to trouble the shorter champion.

The early rounds justified that belief. Using his height, long jab and disciplined movement, Tucker gave Tyson problems from the opening bell. Late in the first round, he landed a sharp left uppercut that visibly stunned Tyson, one of the few occasions during the champion’s rise that an opponent left him on unsteady legs. Tucker also enjoyed success in the third round by tying Tyson up inside, forcing him to reset before launching another attack.

Tyson gradually took control instead of recklessly chasing the taller champion. He showed unusual patience, worked behind his jab, and punished Tucker’s body whenever opportunities emerged. As the rounds passed, Tucker’s offense slowed considerably. He later explained that a right-hand injury suffered before the fight worsened early in the contest, limiting his ability to exchange and forcing him to rely on movement, clinching and occasional showboating to hear the final bell.

There were no knockdowns, but Tyson’s pressure separated the two champions over the second half of the fight. CompuBox credited him with landing 216 of 412 punches compared with Tucker’s 174 of 452.

The judges scored the bout 119-111, 118-113 and 116-112, awarding Tyson a unanimous decision.

Tyson left Las Vegas with the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles. Less than a year later, he knocked out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds to secure the lineal championship, completing one of the most dominant heavyweight runs in boxing history.
