Since losing the Foster rematch in November 2024, Conceicao has defeated Helber Rojas and Yonnaiquer Rondon, neither of whom entered the lightweight title picture. Despite that, the IBF’s No. 11-ranked contender now finds himself fighting for a world championship while several higher-ranked fighters remain on the outside looking in.

Andy Cruz was eliminated from consideration after losing to Muratalla, but Artur Subkhankulov, Dzmitry Asanau, Alan Abel Chaves, Shu Utsuki and Luis Torres were all ranked ahead of Conceicao. Sam Noakes had already committed to the WBC title fight with William Zepeda, yet Conceicao still wasn’t the highest available contender.

The explanation appears to be practical rather than competitive. Conceicao is a former world champion, an Olympic gold medalist and a respected veteran who has spent his professional career with Top Rank. Matching him with Muratalla keeps the title defense in-house while providing a recognizable opponent with championship experience, but it also leaves legitimate questions about whether the most deserving challenger received the opportunity.

The matchup also favors Muratalla physically. Conceicao is naturally smaller, lacks one-punch power and relies on movement, timing and volume. Muratalla is one of the biggest lightweights in boxing, carries fight-changing power and, according to trainer Robert Garcia, may be making his final appearance at 135 pounds before moving to light welterweight.

Conceicao deserves credit for his willingness to test himself against top competition throughout his career. His recent results, however, have not justified another shot at a belt. Saturday’s matchup looks less like a reward for current form and more like a business decision built around familiarity, experience, and promotional convenience.
