The trade deadline is only one series away for the Dodgers, and they have found themselves entrenched on acquiring the biggest fish.
The Detroit Tigers have been on a free fall to begin the second half of the regular season, leaving the future of Tarik Skubal with Detroit up in the air. The Dodgers are firmly in the mix for Skubal, as Shohei Ohtani’s recent injury update leaves them in need of an additional starter, and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com believes that a trade for Skubal would include All-Star southpaw Justin Wrobleski.
The Dodgers could include Wrobleski in a Skubal deal, giving the Tigers a controllable arm – the 26-year-old is under club control for five more seasons – to replace their ace in the rotation, which would give them a chance to chase down the final Wild Card spot even after trading Skubal.
Shohei Ohtani was out of the lineup on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners, but his absence was negligible as the Dodgers ended up taking the series two games to one. Dave Roberts does expect for Ohtani to be back in the lineup for Friday’s opener against the Boston Red Sox, notes Maddie Lee of the Los Angeles Times.
“I expected him to play,” Roberts said before Thursday’s win. “I appreciate him saying that there’s some soreness to then allow me to make a decision of what is in his best interest, and that’s what we’re doing.”
Roberts said he’s “very confident” that Ohtani will be in the lineup Friday when the Dodgers open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
