Spurs legend Manu Ginobili turned 49-years-old yesterday (happy belated birthday, Champ!). Even though he retired in 2018, he’s remained a fixture with the Spurs. From sitting with his family at home games to showing up with Tim Duncan to Gregg Popovich’s retirement announcement (where it was revealed he and Timmy were actively engaged in Pop’s physical therapy and recovery), Ginobili is still a Spur through and through.
The day before his birthday, this snippet of a dialogue between he and fellow teammate Tony Parker was posted:
Manu explained, “I was just giving my opinion as a former player…I was there for three days. And then I spent some time with Brian Wright talking about the team. So I do a little bit of everything but not too much of anything.”
Parker responded by saying, “So basically you are testing you’re testing coaching a little bit to see if you like it and you’re testing the front office, so GM, scout, all that kind of stuff to explain. And so right now, you like a little in both but you don’t want to commit right now because you still want to enjoy your time.”
“Definitely, that’s a great summary,” Manu replied. “I’m trying to contribute in any possible way because I love the organization, everybody in it. I’ve been a part of it for twenty years. so it’s basically my family, too. And I am learning, and then I’ll decide.”
As the Spurs continue to grow and shape a champion caliber roster, there can be no greater support than those who reigned supreme with the first dynasty. And any role Ginobili takes with the organization will enhance the growth of the team and the franchise as a whole.
