Mike Tyson produced the fastest knockout of his professional career on July 26, 1986, overwhelming Marvis Frazier in just 30 seconds at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York. The scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout barely lasted half a minute, yet it became one of the defining moments of Tyson’s rapid climb toward the heavyweight championship.
Tyson had already fought nine times in 1986, leaving a trail of early knockouts that made him the sport’s most feared young contender. Marvis, the son of former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, accepted one of the toughest tests in boxing after rebuilding his career with victories over James Tillis and James “Bonecrusher” Smith. Many observers questioned whether the matchup had come too soon for him.
Despite the modest crowd in Glens Falls, ABC’s Wide World of Sports broadcast the fight nationwide. Tyson earned approximately $135,000 for the bout, well below Marvis Frazier’s reported $250,000 purse. It proved to be the last time Tyson made less money than his opponent.
There was no cautious opening. Tyson stormed across the ring behind his trademark pressure, clipped Frazier with a right hand, then trapped him near the corner. A pair of uppercuts followed. The second, a crushing right, left Frazier unconscious before he collapsed to the canvas without landing a meaningful punch.
Referee Joe Cortez immediately realized the fight was over. He halted his count at five after seeing Frazier was unresponsive, later remarking that he “could have counted to 20” because fighter safety came first.
Tyson later revealed he sensed hesitation from Frazier before the opening bell. He expected the fight to end quickly. Once the excitement faded, his attention turned to Frazier’s condition after the stoppage.
The victory became another milestone in Tyson’s unforgettable 1986 campaign. He returned less than a month later to stop José Ribalta, followed with another knockout over Alfonzo Ratliff, then demolished Trevor Berbick in November to become the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history.
Marvis Frazier never regained his place among the heavyweight contenders. He boxed only three more times before retiring in 1988. Tyson’s 30-second destruction of Frazier remains the fastest knockout of his professional career. Four months later, he captured the heavyweight championship, making the victory one of the defining performances of his rise.
