Promoters normally negotiate purses, secure venues, organize undercards, market events and absorb much of the financial risk involved in staging a card. Those jobs do not disappear because a fighter signs directly with a broadcaster. DAZN has not explained how those responsibilities will be divided, leaving open the possibility that outside promoters or event partners will handle different aspects of each show.

The signing also gives Teofimo more control over his career. Rather than being tied to one promotional company, he has greater freedom to negotiate fights while DAZN continues expanding beyond its role as a broadcaster. After strengthening its relationship with Premier Boxing Champions and adding more high-profile talent, the company is moving toward direct deals with elite fighters instead of relying entirely on promoters to deliver events.

The signing is also a gamble.

Teofimo remains one of boxing’s biggest personalities, but he is coming off a disappointing loss to Shakur Stevenson that damaged his standing among the sport’s top names. His first fight after the announcement is another difficult assignment when he challenges WBA welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on August 22 in Las Vegas.

A victory would immediately strengthen DAZN’s investment. Another loss would leave Teofimo with consecutive defeats and force the company to sell one of its newest signings coming off back-to-back setbacks.

DAZN deserves credit for trying something different. If direct fighter deals become common, the balance of power in boxing could shift away from exclusive promotional contracts. The risk is that DAZN may have made its move at the wrong moment. Teofimo still has name recognition and drawing power, but those advantages shrink quickly if the wins stop coming. That’s what makes this signing one of the more intriguing business bets in boxing this year.
