Mystery Title For Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn

The promotion has repeatedly discussed its long-term goal of operating with one champion per weight class. If that plan begins in September, Garcia-Benn would be a logical stage for introducing a Zuffa world welterweight title.

Instead of advertising the fight as the WBC World Welterweight Championship, Zuffa chose far more general language.

Several outcomes remain possible. Ryan may simply enter the ring carrying the WBC belt as champion, with Zuffa avoiding sanctioning-body branding in its own promotional material. Another scenario is that the company reveals its own championship belt during fight week or on the night of the event, making the winner the first Zuffa welterweight champion.

A third possibility is that both titles are recognized, with Garcia entering as WBC champion while the victor also receives a Zuffa championship belt.

None of those outcomes has been confirmed. The poster itself offers no explanation beyond the phrase “World Welterweight Championship.”

For a promotion launching what it has billed as a new era in boxing, the lack of specificity is difficult to ignore. Identifying the fight as a WBC title bout would have been easy. Choosing broader language instead has shifted attention toward what Zuffa plans to place in the ring when Ryan and Benn are introduced.

Zuffa may answer that question during fight week or wait until the championship presentation on September 12. Until then, the identity of the title being contested remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the event.
