Errol Spence Jr. Receives Traditional Welcome in Australia

Errol Spence Jr. Receives Traditional Welcome in Australia

Errol Spence Jr.’s arrival in Australia ahead of his July 25 clash against Tim Tszyu included a traditional Aboriginal welcome ceremony, giving the former unified welterweight champion a memorable introduction to the host country.

Ring Magazine shared a video of Spence taking part in the ceremony after landing in Sydney. The event featured a traditional smoking ritual using eucalyptus leaves, Aboriginal dancers in ceremonial body paint and cultural performances. Spence also joined in by holding a ceremonial club and posing for photos with the performers.

The ceremony offered a respectful welcome before Spence began the final stage of his preparation for one of the biggest fights of his career. It also marked a sharp contrast to the travel concerns that surfaced earlier this week when passport issues briefly threatened to delay his departure for Australia.

Spence has now arrived with more than a week remaining before he meets former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. The fight will be contested at a 160-pound catchweight after the originally planned 158-pound limit was increased.

The bout represents another attempt by Spence to rebuild momentum after a lengthy period of inactivity. A victory over Tszyu would immediately put him back into the conversation for major fights at junior middleweight or middleweight, while a loss would leave serious questions about how much he has left after years away from the ring.

The event will stream live on DAZN worldwide.
