Pirates star SS Konnor Griffin expected to miss 8-10 weeks with torn finger tendon

Pittsburgh Pirates star shortstop Konnor Griffin is expected to miss 8-10 weeks with a torn tendon in his left ring finger, per the team. He is expected to be added to the injured list Tuesday afternoon.

Griffin began the year as baseball’s No. 1 prospect and was quickly called up to Pittsburgh’s big-league club.

The shortstop showed his potential, tallying an RBI in his first career game, but also learned the transition to the major leagues is not always easy.

Griffin has gone through hot and cold spells this season. Overall, he is slashing .276/.332/.404 in 59 games. He has 5 home runs, 25 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

On July 5, the shortstop made an acrobatic snag fading into left field, but afterward realized something was off with his glove hand.

Griffin had managed to tear the tendon in his left ring finger. He could play through it, but the doctor recommended putting his finger in a splint for six weeks. After that, Griffin will be able to ramp back up to get into game shape, putting his expected return to the field around September.

The Pirates are currently 46-45 and in fourth place in the NL Central. Pittsburgh will be down one of their better bats and is already down Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz, who are on the IL.
