The opening rounds saw Vargas attempt to establish his jab and use his size advantage, but Rodriguez quickly found his rhythm. The San Antonio native consistently beat Vargas to the punch, creating angles and landing sharp combinations while avoiding prolonged exchanges.

As the fight progressed, Rodriguez’s speed and accuracy began to separate him from the defending champion. Vargas showed toughness and remained competitive in spots, but he struggled to deal with Rodriguez’s timing and ability to attack from different positions.

Rodriguez produced the decisive moment in the fifth round when he floored Vargas with a heavy shot that visibly shifted the momentum further in his favor. Vargas rose to continue, but the punishment had taken its toll.

The end came in Round 6. Rodriguez unleashed another crisp combination, punctuated by a powerful right hand that left Vargas unable to continue. Referee intervention followed shortly afterward, officially awarding Rodriguez a technical knockout victory.

The win improved Rodriguez’s record to 24-0 with 17 knockouts and reinforced his status as one of boxing’s elite fighters. Moving up from super flyweight to challenge for a title at 118 pounds, Rodriguez handled the transition with ease against a champion making the first defense of his WBA crown.

Vargas, who entered the bout with a 19-2-1 record after retaining the title in a draw against Daigo Higa, showed determination throughout but could not match Rodriguez’s superior skill set and finishing ability.

For Rodriguez, the victory opens the door to several major opportunities at bantamweight, including potential unification bouts against the division’s other titleholders. A future move to super bantamweight could also bring additional high-profile matchups as he continues building one of the strongest résumés in the sport.

On this night, however, Rodriguez needed only six rounds to prove that his success can carry into yet another weight class. Against Vargas, “Bam” delivered the type of clinical performance expected from a pound-for-pound talent operating at the peak of his powers.
