Jermell Charlo In Line To Face Winner Of Tim Tszyu Vs. Errol Spence Jr.

Jermell Charlo In Line To Face Winner Of Tim Tszyu Vs. Errol Spence Jr.

Jermell Charlo is being lined up for a possible return against the winner of Tim Tszyu vs. Errol Spence Jr., giving the former undisputed junior middleweight champion a direct path back into a major fight at 154.

Charlo, 36, has not fought since September 30, 2023, when he moved up two weight classes and lost a one-sided 12-round decision to Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight championship. His absence has left his future unclear, but a return at junior middleweight now appears to be in play.

“Jermell Charlo has not been seen since he lost to Canelo Alvarez. He moved up two weight classes to 168,” Mike Coppinger said on Inside The Ring. “Now I’m being told, he’s being lined up for the winner of the Tim Tszyu-Errol Spence fight, which is taking place next month [July 26th] in Australia.

“So, obviously, nothing has been done yet. What I’m being told, behind the scenes, Charlo is being lined up for that fight, which will be at 154. And that’s his best weight class obviously. He was the undisputed champion at 154. He was the Ring champ there, and he’s been pretty active on social media for the last couple of months talking about in terms of 154.

“And don’t forget, Charlo and Spence used to train together with Derrick James. So a lot of intrigue there.”

Tszyu and Spence are scheduled to meet on July 26 in Australia, with the winner now potentially positioned for a bigger follow-up fight against Jermell. For Spence, the storyline would carry added history because of his past connection with Charlo through trainer Derrick James.

It would be another chance to secure the Jermell fight for Tszyu that once appeared possible before Charlo moved up to challenge Canelo. Jermell was stripped of his WBO title in 2023, with Tszyu elevated to full champion.

Charlo owns a 35-2-1 record with 19 knockouts and remains one of the most accomplished fighters in the division, but his long layoff makes any immediate return against the Tszyu-Spence winner a high-risk move.
