Jack Catterall has reacted to reports that WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero is expected to make a summer title defense against a lesser opponent rather than immediately facing him.
According to a report from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger, Romero is expected to defend his title this summer, although a “tough fight” is not anticipated for his first appearance since defeating Ryan Garcia in May 2025.
Catterall quickly responded on social media.

The comments come after the WBA ordered Romero and Catterall to begin negotiations for a fight within 180 days.
Romero has not defended the WBA welterweight title since defeating Garcia more than a year ago. Former mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov eventually moved on after waiting for his title opportunity and instead faced Catterall on the May 23 “Glory in Giza” card in Egypt.
Catterall defeated Giyasov by unanimous decision over 12 rounds at the Pyramids of Giza to capture the WBA’s secondary welterweight title and improve his position in the sanctioning body’s rankings.
Following that victory, the WBA ordered Romero and Catterall to negotiate a bout, potentially setting up a title consolidation fight at welterweight.
Catterall appears frustrated by reports suggesting Romero could take a voluntary defense before facing him. The ordered bout would give Catterall his first opportunity to challenge for the WBA’s primary welterweight championship at 147 pounds as a professional.
