Why the Zuffa Deal Won’t Save Billam-Smith from Jai Opetaia

The Erosion of the Engine

The version of Billam-Smith that outworked Lawrence Okolie relied on a relentless engine and an iron chin. However, the punishment he absorbed in his late 2024 loss to Gilberto Ramirez, and even in his laborious decision over Brandon Glanton in April 2025, showed signs of wear.

A year out of the ring since the Glanton fight hasn’t allowed him to age in reverse. Inactivity for a 35-year-old slugger is rarely a reset; it’s usually the beginning of the end. By the time he steps into the Bournemouth International Center on June 6th, he will have to prove he hasn’t left his best days in the gym during that long layoff.

The Rozicki Trap

Ryan Rozicki is the definition of a dangerous tune-up. With a 95% knockout ratio, Rozicki doesn’t need to outbox Billam-Smith; he just needs to land once while the veteran finds his rhythm.

After the heavy shots Billam-Smith took from Ramirez, can his chin still withstand a pure puncher like Rozicki?

A year of ring rust combined with declining reflexes is a recipe for disaster against a fighter who thrives on chaos.

The Opetaia Mismatch

Billam-Smith’s obsession with Jai Opetaia ignores the technical gulf between the two. Opetaia is the crown jewel of the Zuffa roster for a reason. He is younger, faster, and possesses the southpaw movement that completely neutralized Billam-Smith in the Ramirez fight.

“If they didn’t have Jai, it wouldn’t have been as big a move for me,” Billam-Smith said to Sky Sports Boxing.

This suggests a fighter prioritizing a final, massive payday over a sustainable rebuild. If Zuffa Boxing wants to build a long-term brand in the UK, feeding their primary British asset to a stylistic nightmare like Opetaia is a quick way to extinguish their momentum.

Billam-Smith is counting on the “electric” Bournemouth atmosphere to mask his physical decline. But the crowd can’t slip punches for him, and they can’t turn back the clock. If Billam-Smith struggles with Rozicki, the Opetaia fight is dead. Nobody is going to pay to see an aging veteran get dismantled by the division’s top shark after failing to handle a domestic-level puncher.
