Floyd Schofield Sr. isn’t just talking up his son anymore. The back-and-forth with Devin Haney has turned personal, and he’s now framing Floyd Schofield Jr. as the answer to a style he believes fans are tired of watching.
The edge in the story comes from history, not just opinion. Schofield Jr. has claimed he “whipped” Haney in sparring, using that as proof that Haney’s approach can be broken. He also alleged Haney’s company, Devin Haney Promotions, tried to sign him right after that session.
The implication from their side is obvious: if Haney was so comfortable, why pursue him behind the scenes?
Schofield Sr. leaned into the same critique during a recent interview, dismissing the current top-level style as low-impact boxing.
“They going to go in there smacking and running. Nobody going to have a busted nose, busted lip,” Floyd Sr. said to Fighthype about Haney. “It’s going to come down to the judges. Nobody going to dominate.”
The pitch is simple: “Kid Austin” presses, forces exchanges, and doesn’t wait on scorecards.
There’s also real positioning behind Floyd Sr’s comments. Schofield Jr. is currently ranked #1 by the WBA at lightweight, which puts him in range of a mandatory slot. The primary target has been Gervonta Davis, but the Haney angle gives him a second lane toward a major fight.
Haney’s side hasn’t ignored it. He’s pushed back on social media, dismissing the talk as clout chasing while pointing to Schofield’s thin record at the top level outside of his quick finish of Tevin Farmer. The exchanges have also drifted into personal territory, which explains the sharper tone from Schofield Sr. in interviews.
That timing plays a role here. Haney is still linked to a potential rematch with Ryan Garcia later this year, leaving his next move uncertain. Schofield Sr. is using that opening to position his son as the alternative, a fighter he insists won’t fall into the same low-output pattern.
They think Haney’s style creates close fights. They think their guy breaks that pattern.
