Vergil Ortiz Stalled As Golden Boy Case Heads To July Hearing

Vergil Ortiz Jr’s immediate future remains tied up outside the ring, with his dispute against Golden Boy Promotions now set to move into arbitration on July 14 in Las Vegas. While one of the sport’s most dangerous junior middleweights waits for movement, other major names at 154 pounds are already pressing ahead.

Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) and Golden Boy are locked in opposing legal claims over their promotional relationship. BoxingScene reported Monday that the case is on track for a summer mediation process, with a wider resolution potentially arriving by September.

The unbeaten Texas fighter has been linked in recent months to a high-level fight with Jaron Ennis, who attended Ortiz’s stoppage win over Erickson Lubin in November. Talks between the two sides later fell apart as the relationship between Ortiz and Golden Boy worsened.

Ennis has since moved on to challenge unbeaten champion Xander Zayas on June 27 at Barclays Center in New York, leaving Ortiz watching one of the division’s biggest available fights pass by.

That is the real cost of these cases. A fighter can stay unbeaten, remain ranked, and still lose valuable time while business disputes drag on. Ortiz is 27 and still in his physical prime, but active years do not last long in boxing, especially in loaded divisions where contenders are constantly being replaced by the next available name.

Judge Cristina D. Silva reportedly directed the matter toward arbitration last month and also barred Ortiz from dealing with third parties until the case is resolved. A three-day hearing is expected, with written closing submissions to follow before a ruling is sent back to the court.

Ortiz has already shown he belongs near the front of the 154-pound pack. His knockout of Lubin strengthened that view. The issue now is not whether he can fight at the elite level. It is whether the business around him keeps slowing the road when the division is moving without him.
