The New England Patriots’ defense had one of their worst games of the season on Sunday, in their 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at Gillette Stadium.
Just two days later, the team announced three roster moves all on the defensive side of the ball.
New England opened up two roster spots by releasing linebacker Ochaun Mathis and placing linebacker Curtis Jacobs on injured reserve.
Mathis, 25, spent most of this season on New England’s practice squad and was officially signed to the active roster at the end of October after he reached his elevation limit. He appeared in five games, recording two total tackles.
Jacobs, 22, was a waiver claim after roster cuts this year. He appeared in nine games, recording four tackles this year before suffering a head injury in Sunday’s matchup.
To fill one of the newly-opened roster spots, the Patriots signed linebacker Titus Leo off the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. The 25-year-old played collegiately at Wagner where he recorded 234 tackles (40 for a loss), 13 sacks, six forced fumbles, four passes defensed, three blocked kicks, two fumbles recovered and an interception over five years. The Colts took him in the sixth round of last year’s draft, but he hasn’t played an NFL snap yet.
