Red Bull shakes up its F1 technical team

Red Bull has promoted its long-time head of performance engineering Ben Waterhouse into a more senior role, grabbing Racing Bulls’ deputy technical director Andrea Landi as his replacement.

On Friday, Red Bull announced Waterhouse would move to the role of chief performance and design engineer, bridging the design and vehicle performance departments and reporting to technical director Pierre Wache.

The team explained this cross-department role “strengthens integration between these areas and will accelerate the development of competitive, high-performing solutions”.

Former BMW-Sauber man Waterhouse first joined the Red Bull umbrella in 2014 as Toro Rosso’s deputy technical director before moving across to Red Bull Racing in 2017.

In his previous role, Waterhouse will be replaced from 1 July onwards by Andrea Landi, who comes over from sister team Racing Bulls to become head of performance.

At Faenza, Landi was one of two deputy technical directors under CTO Tim Goss and technical director Dan Fallows, who has  joined from Aston Martin. At the team Landi covered car design, while Guillaume Cattelani heads up the car performance department.

Red Bull said the changes “reflect its continued focus on developing internal talent while attracting leading expertise from across the sport”.

The team had been making more headlines on outgoing than incoming transfers in recent months, with news emerging last week that Max Verstappen’s long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase is set to join rival McLaren from 2028 onwards. Most recently, former Red Bull strategy chief Will Courtenay took up his new role at McLaren as sporting director.

Red Bull endured a tough start to the 2026 season, struggling with fundamental issues to its RB22 car that has made it difficult to set up.

The team currently lies in sixth place in the constructors’ standings after three grand prix weekends, scoring just 16 points with a best result of sixth for Verstappen in Australia’s season opener.
