Ernesto Mercado Hits Free Agency as Promoters Circle, No Deal Yet

His father and trainer, Ernesto Snr, made clear to Boxingscene that outreach has already begun, describing contact from “the biggest powerhouses who control boxing” as the family weighs its options.

That kind of language signals activity, but it also points to a negotiation phase rather than a finished move. Mercado (18-0, 17 KOs) brings a high knockout rate and an aggressive style that promoters look for when building cards, yet he has not faced a top-level opponent, leaving questions about how quickly he can be moved beyond prospect status.

The current market gives him options. Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions continue to develop contenders through measured matchmaking, while Zuffa Boxing has entered the market with a more selective approach to signing fighters. Each route offers a different balance between short-term exposure and long-term development, and none has yet separated itself as the clear destination.

Mercado has remained active in the gym while the process plays out, with his team targeting a return in the summer against a “respectable opponent.” That next fight will carry more weight than the current interest, as it would mark the first step beyond his current level of opposition and provide a clearer read on where he fits among contenders.

The attention is real, but it has not translated into a deal or a defined path. The next move, rather than the number of promoters calling, will show how the market truly values him.
