Keith Thurman still disputes Fundora stoppage, targets commentary

Thurman says commentary misled viewers, but replays show him under sustained pressure, taking clean shots, and offering little return before the referee stepped in

Keith Thurman’s issue appears to be with the commentary after rewatching the fight, but the sequence leading to the stoppage was clear enough on its own. By the sixth round, Sebastian Fundora was landing repeatedly, while Keith offered little in return and was taking clean shots without slowing the attack.

Commentators are misleading…look with your eyes what lands? Who is hurt? One big joke! I miss old school boxing 🥊 pic.twitter.com/KQiC0YvRk9

The March 28 bout ended in a TKO after Thurman absorbed sustained pressure from Fundora, who used his height and reach to control exchanges and land repeatedly from range.

Thurman’s face showed visible swelling during the sequence, and his output had slowed before the referee stepped in. Fundora really did look like he was having the time of his life.

When a fighter is landing at will, and the other guy is strictly in survival mode without any offensive output, the referee is basically just doing his job to save a veteran from himself. If you aren’t throwing anything back to keep a guy like Fundora off you, you’re essentially handing the referee the scissors to cut the fight short.

Fundora’s reach makes it look even worse because he can pick you apart without even breaking a sweat. Reaction to Thurman’s post has been split, but much of it pushes back on his version of events.

Some fans agreed the stoppage came early and pointed to his history of fighting through adversity. Others were more direct, arguing he was taking clean shots without returning enough and that the referee acted to prevent further damage.

Fundora’s performance has been widely viewed as decisive, with the WBC junior middleweight champion dictating the pace and distance throughout the later rounds.

Thurman’s criticism focuses on commentary, but the decision ultimately came from what the referee saw in real time inside the ring.
