Red Sox Minor Lines: A brilliant outing from Juan Valera

Worcester Red Sox 5, Columbus Clippers 0 (BOX)

The Woo Sox got seven hits from seven different starters on Thursday, accounting for five runs against the Clippers (CLE) in a 5-0 victory. Vinny Capra and Jason Delay’s RBIs were on doubles. The pitching was outstanding, with 26-year-old Jack Anderson throwing six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven for the win. Tyler Uberstine, who made a brief detour in Boston last weekend, ended up with a save of the three-inning variety, striking out three to complete the shutout.

On Friday night, Jake Bennett (1-1, 0.00) will take the hill for the Woo Sox.

Portland Sea Dogs 4, New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3 (BOX)

Third baseman Ahbram Liendo lined a single into right field on Thursday night, handing Portland a 4-3 walkoff victory over the Fisher Cats (TOR).

Plenty of good seats available in Portland for night games these days; looking a bit chilly.

For the Sea Dogs, Eduardo Rivera got the start and threw 4 1/3 strong innings, striking out seven. The win went to Cooper Adams, who threw 2 2/3 shutout innings and struck out five.

Portland won despite being outhit ten to four on the day, with a two-run home run by Drew Ehrhard as the biggest blast. Will Turner walked in all four of his plate appearances.

On Friday at 6:00, Portland’s starting pitcher is TBD.

Greenville Drive 2, Hub City Spartanburgers 0 (BOX)

An outstanding performance out of Juan Valera stole the show for the Drive against Hub City (TEX) on Thursday night. Not only did Valera strike out nine batters over five innings, but he was very efficient by throwing 56 pitches to get through five innings to qualify for the win.

The Spartanburgers struck out 17 times in the game, with Joey Gartrell and Steven Brooks finishing off the 2-0 shutout. Centerfielder Isaiah Jackson’s two-run triple in the seventh inning accounted for all of the scoring on the day.

On Friday at 7:05, Kyson Witherspoon (0-1, 10.80) will take the bump for Greenville.

Salem RidgeYaks 2, Wilson Warbirds 1 (BOX)

Salem defeated the Wilson Warbirds (MIL) in a game that was generally dominated by pitching, as many of these early April games are. The Warbirds took the lead in the top of the fourth on a throwing error, before the RidgeYaks tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by D’Angelo Ortiz. In the bottom of the eighth, a wild pitch by Wilson pitcher Garrett Hodges scored Andrews Opata with the go-ahead, and eventually winning, run. Opata and Ortiz each had two hits on the day.

Madinson Frias (0-0, 32.40) will toe the rubber for the RidgeYaks at 6:35 on Friday.
