Emiliano Vargas starts building Ryan Garcia ‘super fight’

“That’s a fight that I would love to fight. I think the fans would be all over it. And everything in due time,” he said on the Mr. Versace podcast. He went further when discussing the potential scale of the bout, adding, “I think that’d be a super fight. Honestly, I think it’d be a super fight.”

The 21-year-old also took a verbal at Ryan’s lifestyle outside the ring, drawing a contrast with his own approach.

“We know he drinks. We know he parties. He does all this other stuff. He has mental episodes. This stuff that we do know,” Emiliano said. He continued, “Maybe we fight, and three, four rehabs later, we’ll see if he’s still able to make the fight. Discipline wins at the end of the day. I’m willing to do what you won’t do.”

The timeline of Vargas’ recent behavior suggests he is looking for a shortcut to force the Ryan Garcia fight into existence rather than a traditional five-year build.

Here is why it looks like he’s aiming for an immediate “cash-out” or “takeover” moment:

Since his TKO win over Quintana in February, Emiliano has shifted from a respectful prospect to a full-time antagonist. Bringing up Ryan’s failed drug test and calling him a partier. It shows that he’s creating bad blood, which potentially will increase the public demand for the fight. Thus far, it doesn’t appear to be working.

The problem Emiliano has is that he still hasn’t beaten any contenders. His push for a fight against George Kambosos is the wrong move. This isn’t a good enough fighter to move to make fans notice Emiliano.

By constantly comparing this to Vargas vs. De La Hoya, Emiliano appears to be trying to convince networks and promoters that this is a legacy fight that doesn’t need a world title on the line to sell pay-per-view.

Would it be asking too much for Emiliano to fight contender Ernesto Mercado to prove himself? Mercado is only 23, and unbeaten with an 18-0 record. The WBO even has Emiliano ranked above Mercado. It would be a good idea for them to fight, and the winner would be the one who takes over as the one pushing for a Ryan Garcia fight.
