Chavez Jr. vs Jhon Caicedo set for April 25 fight in Mexico

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is being booked again despite years of losses, inactivity, and issues outside the ring, with a new fight set for April 25 in Mexico.

The former WBC middleweight titleholder will face Jhon Caicedo on that date at Estadio Adolfo Lopez Mateos in Reynosa, as confirmed on Wednesday. The booking marks Chavez’s second appearance of 2026, following a fourth-round stoppage of Angel Sacco in January, a bout that came after a lengthy gap in activity.

Chavez (55-7-1, 35 KOs) has gone 9-7 since 2012 and has not recorded a notable win during that stretch. His most recent high-profile outing ended in a clear decision loss to Jake Paul in June, a cruiserweight fight where Chavez struggled to compete over the distance. His career trajectory has steadily declined since moving up from middleweight, where he previously held a size advantage over much of his opposition.

Caicedo (13-1, 5 KOs), a 21-year-old from Colombia, enters the fight coming off a third-round knockout loss to Avni Yildirim last June in Turkey. He has not fought since that defeat and has yet to face a recognized contender.

Chavez, 40, is now based in Mexico after being arrested last July near his Los Angeles home for overstaying his visa and allegedly providing false information on a green card application. He was deported and released from custody in August and is awaiting further legal proceedings tied to the case. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security previously stated that Chavez had an active warrant in Mexico connected to alleged involvement in organized crime and firearms trafficking.

The April 25 fight moves forward under sanctioning approval, adding another bout to Chavez’s schedule despite a record and situation that would normally limit opportunities at this level.
