Callum Smith says interim title path kept him fighting as world title route narrowed

The 35-year-old pointed to the period following his loss and the inactivity that followed, describing it as a stretch where continuing did not hold much appeal without a clear objective. The belts at the top level were tied up, and the path back involved going through multiple fights without any guarantee of getting another shot.

That changed when the current fight came with an interim title attached. For Smith, that altered the calculation.

“I wasn’t fighting just for the sake of fighting,” Callum said to The Stomping Ground, explaining that the opportunity on offer placed him “very, very close” to becoming a world champion again.

He added that without that incentive, the fight itself would not have been enough to bring him back into full preparation. The distinction reflects a shift in priorities that can come later in a career, particularly for fighters who have already achieved their initial goals.

Smith acknowledged that becoming a world champion had once been the only target when he turned professional, and that achievement alone would have been enough at the time. Experience has changed that view, but not in a way that extends to open-ended rebuilding phases.

Instead, his focus has narrowed to opportunities that move him directly toward another title.

The interim route offers that, even if it comes with the wider questions that often surround those belts. In Smith’s case, it has provided a clear enough path to keep him active when other options did not.

Callum defends his WBO interim 175-lb title against David Morrell on April 18th. A win in Liverpool would place him within immediate reach of another world title fight. A loss would likely leave him facing the kind of rebuild he has already indicated does not appeal at this point.

That trade-off appears to define where he stands now, balancing what he has already achieved against what still feels attainable.
