Ryan Garcia eyes mid-July return after winning WBC title

Ryan Garcia is moving quickly into his first title defense, and his team is treating the win over Mario Barrios as a starting point rather than a finish line.

Garcia is expected to return in mid-July to headline a Ring Magazine card, his manager Guadalupe Valencia told Fight Freaks Unite, with full training camp set to begin at the start of May. The timeline comes less than two months after Ryan captured the WBC welterweight title, suggesting there is no plan to stretch out his time away from the ring.

The 27-year-old from Los Angeles delivered one of the most controlled performances of his career on February 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He dropped Barrios in the opening round and went on to win a wide decision to claim the 147-pound belt. The win followed a run of uneven outings and gave Garcia his first title at welterweight.

There was some concern after the fight when Garcia revealed he had sprained his right hand, but Valencia downplayed the issue.

“The hand is much better,” Valencia said. “Luckily, he only has to rest it. He will start full camp at the top of May.”

That update keeps the focus on scheduling rather than recovery. Garcia is expected to enter camp on time, which leaves room for a full build toward a summer defense.

Valencia said discussions about Garcia’s first opponent as WBC champion are expected to begin this week, although no names have been mentioned yet. The direction will become clearer once those talks get underway.

Garcia is coming off the most disciplined performance of his career, and the quick turnaround suggests his team wants to keep him active while that form is still there.
