Ryan Garcia’s father insists he remains the A-side over Devin Haney

Ryan Garcia’s father insists he remains the A-side over Devin Haney

Ryan Garcia’s father, Henry Garcia, believes his son still holds the leverage in boxing’s biggest potential rematch, even as Devin Haney’s camp argues the opposite.

During a recent interview discussing the ongoing back-and-forth around a Garcia–Haney sequel, Henry dismissed the idea that Haney should control the terms of any deal. In his view, the determining factor is simple: Ryan Garcia is still the attraction.

“My son brings in the crowds,” Henry said to MillCity Boxing about Ryan being the bigger draw than Haney. “Think about that. My son can sell tickets. He’s a star. He’s a superstar. He’s the main one. So why would he be on the B-side if he can bring out the numbers, as he did with Tank and like he just recently did with Barrios?”

The remark highlights the divide between the two camps as discussions about a second fight continue to circulate in boxing circles. Haney has pointed to his standing in the division and his presence on pound-for-pound lists as reasons he deserves the stronger negotiating position. Garcia’s side views the situation through a different lens, arguing that commercial appeal ultimately decides who sits in the driver’s seat.

That disagreement has become part of the public exchange between the two sides. Haney has already suggested that Garcia must be “realistic” if talks are to move forward, while Garcia and his father have continued to emphasize Ryan’s popularity and ability to draw large audiences. Henry said the issue comes down to star power.

“People want to see Ryan,” he said. “Ryan will fight you at your prime. No excuses. Fight my son.”

The debate continues while Haney also has other options in front of him. Talks have circulated about a possible fight with Rolando “Rolly” Romero on May 30, while negotiations with Garcia remain unresolved.

A rematch between Haney and Garcia has been discussed for September if both sides can reach terms, though Henry Garcia’s belief that Ryan is the draw could make those talks more difficult.

That’s why Henry Garcia’s comments get attention. If Ryan’s side keeps seeing him as the draw in the rivalry, reaching terms for a rematch with Haney could get harder, not easier.
