‘Never seen anything like it’

FORMER Chelsea star Filipe Luis was left incensed after a controversial VAR ruling in a major cup final.

The bizarre incident occurred as Flamengo, managed by ex-Blue Luis, played rivals Corinthians in the Brazilian Super Cup.

The two giants produced a full-blooded battle as Corinthians won 2-0 thanks to goals from ex-Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista and Brazil international Yuri Alberto.

And it also marked Lucas Paqueta’s return to Brazil after rejoining Flamengo from West Ham last month.

But the game was marred by controversy after a never-seen-before VAR decision.

Just before half-time and with his side a goal down, Flamengo star Jorge Carrascal caught Corinthians’ Breno Bidon with an elbow to the face.

It saw Bidon collapse to the floor in pain for several minutes.

But there was no VAR intervention as referee Rafael Klein then blew for half-time.

Both teams came out to kick off the second half.

However, as the game started, Klein then blew his whistle before running to the VAR monitor on the side of the pitch.

Despite the midway break having taken place since the incident, it quickly transpired he was reviewing Carrascal’s elbow to Bidon.

It came as a shock to both sides, who assumed the moment had come and gone.

But it was bad news for Flamengo, as ref Klein decided his elbow was a red card offence.

The Colombian was promptly giving his marching orders, allowing Corinthians to dominate proceedings and eventually put the game to bed with a second goal deep in stoppage time.

The strange VAR incident was blasted by Flamengo boss Luis, who raged: “I’ve never seen that in my life.

“I don’t know if it’s ever happened anywhere else. The players waited on the pitch and headed to the dressing room as if the player had already been reviewed.

“We prepared the whole plan to play 11 vs 11 and then that happens.

“I don’t want to make excuses for the defeat, but I had never seen anything like it before.”
