This highly anticipated championship bout features the boxer-puncher Teofimo Lopez versus the ultimate ring technician Shakur Stevenson. Due to his superior skill set, Shakur is the betting favorite, but Teofimo is definitely a live dog.

When the lights are shining bright, Teofimo Lopez rises to the occasion. Back in October 2020, Lopez shocked the world when he defeated Vasiliy Lomachenko and won the WBA, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles.

Three years later, Lopez dominated Josh Taylor and won the WBO and The Ring super-lightweight titles. Lopez would go on to have three successful world title defenses.

Now Teofimo Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) is set to make a fourth title defense against the best lightweight in the world. The reigning WBC lightweight champion, Shakur Stevenson, moved up to 140 to challenge himself because he wants to face all of the top tier fighters.

Shakur Stevenson is an elite ring technician who has an educated jab, speed, accuracy, footwork, excellent punch variations, and airtight defense. During his 24 fight career, Stevenson has routinely outboxed his opponents.

Like a Major League Baseball pitcher, Shakur would dictate the pace, control distance, and execute the shutout. Some of his opponents were fortunate in winning one or two rounds.

Shakur has posted wins against good opponents, but Teofimo Lopez is definitely the most talented competitor that Shakur has ever faced. Teofimo’s best attributes are his speed, athleticism, and explosiveness.

In order to defend his title successfully, Teofimo must stay disciplined through the course of the 12-round contest. He must eliminate his habit of reaching and overcommitting.

On the offensive end, Teofimo Lopez has to dictate the pace of the bout by fighting off the front foot. Lopez must be effective as it relates to cutting the ring off and utilizing controlled aggression. Lopez’s main objective is to take Stevenson out of his comfort zone.

The southpaw Shakur Stevenson wins this fight by simply being himself. Utilizing constant movement, controlling the center of the ring, throwing the jab, touching the body, and connecting with timely countershots.

Saturday night’s main event is a very intriguing fight because it features Shakur’s fundamentals vs Teofimo’s unorthodox athleticism. Conventional wisdom makes you think Shakur’s ring generalship will guide him to victory.

On the other hand, Teofimo’s unorthodox style and his athleticism could cause problems. Another element that could potentially be problematic is Lopez’s punching power.

On Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, will Teofimo Lopez place another big name on his resume, or will Shakur Stevenson earn a crowning achievement and become a four-division world champion?
