Premier League cult hero, 47, hired as manager of club in Zimbabwe after ‘splendid recommendation’

PREMIER LEAGUE legend Benjani Mwaruwari has been hired as the manager of a club in Zimbabwe after a “splendid recommendation.”

The 47-year-old is returning to his homeland as gaffer of Highlanders Football Club.

Benjani was given a “splendid recommendation” by the club’s sponsors, Wicknell Chivayo.

And they will pay his salary as Benjani looks to cut his teeth in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League.

Highlanders are hoping he can deliver the goods after finishing 11th in the table last season.

It will be Benjani’s first-ever managerial gig.

And he joins after a spell as an academy coach with League One side Plymouth Argyle.

Benjani will certainly bring plenty of Premier League experience to his new role.

After starring in France for Auxerre, he joined Portsmouth in 2006 and became a key figure under Harry Redknapp.

A move to Man City then followed in 2008 before a loan spell at Sunderland.

Benjani later returned to Portsmouth before retiring from football in 2014.

He enjoyed a glittering international career too, playing 42 times for Zimbabwe.

Benjani scored 10 goals for his country before ending his international career in 2010.

And he also captained them from 2006, becoming a fan favourite in the process.
