Controversial former Liverpool owner dies as his children release emotional statement

FORMER Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has died at the age of 79.

Hicks and George Gillett purchased a 50 per cent stake in the Reds in 2007 before selling to Fenway Sports Group three years later.

The Hicks and Gillett reign at Anfield was marred by financial difficulties and they were widely unpopular with fans.

They left after racking up debts of £237million and having failed to deliver on promises of a stadium revamp.

A statement released by the Hicks family reads: “Of everything he accomplished in his remarkable life, Tom Hicks’s most cherished title was, ‘Dad.’

“No matter the trials and tribulations he faced in life, he was constant in his generosity and love for his family.

“He remains a guiding force for our family, and we are deeply honoured to continue expanding his legacy.

“Although we are devastated by this loss, we are profoundly grateful to have been his children.”

Hicks is said to have died peacefully in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday.

The Texas-born investor also owned NHL team the Dallas Stars for 16 years, as well as baseball outfit the Texas Rangers for 12 years.
