NEWCASTLE eased to victory over 10-man Burnley who also gave away a penalty on the day to press self-destruct.
The Magpies dominated proceedings from the start and took the lead through captain Bruno Guimaraes in the 31st minute directly from a corner.
The Brazilian beautifully whipped the ball in over a stranded Martin Dubravka to settle St James’ Park.
Just before half time, Guimaraes reverted back to playmaker, threading a ball through to the electric Anthony Elanga who was brought down by Burnley’s last man, Lucas Pires.
That red card inspired a chaotic end to the first-half with the added injury time giving time for Lesley Ugochukwu to commit a silly handball while challenging Nick Woltermade for a header.
The subsequent penalty was dispatched by Anthony Gordon to give the Toon full control heading into the break.
