‘Not good enough’ – Gerrard demands Slot finds answer to Liverpool’s nightmare amid worst run of form in 72 YEARS

STEVEN GERRARD has said there are “no excuses” for Liverpool’s nightmare run of form.

Another defeat for Arne Slot’s side, this time a 4-1 defeat at Anfield to PSV in the Champions League, means the Reds have now lost nine of their last 12 matches.

That is the club’s worst run of form since November 1953 and January 1954.

It was also the last season Liverpool were relegated from the top flight of English football.

Kop icon Gerrard stopped short of saying Liverpool were in crisis, considering the squad’s title-winning exploits last season.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the 45-year-old said: “Each defeat, especially in the manner of the defeat, you get closer to the crisis.

“I don’t like using that because to me a crisis is a club that needs year to get back to the top and I don’t think Liverpool are at that point at all.

“They’ve still got magnificent players and the majority of this squad won the league. So I think ‘crisis’ is too strong.”

Asked about the historically bad run Slot ‘s flops are on, Gerrard continued: “That’s not good enough. There’s no excuses for that at this football club.

“Everyone knows that. But crisis is a strong word and is very disrespectful to some of the players that have delivered for this football club, and for the manager that’s delivered.

“If this was six months down the line, a year down the line, and we’re further away from that success then maybe you can use a word like that.”

However, Gerrard warned Slot needed to urgently find answers to stop the rot and get the team back on track.

Gerrard added: “You can’t deny this team is struggling massively, they’re on a terrible run, confidence is at an all-time low and they just keep bleeding.

“They keep conceding goals, they’re wide open and unless the manager can find answers and stability in the team they’re going to continue.”

Slot himself was shell-shocked after the PSV defeat and could barely find the words to describe the latest calamity to his Premier League champions.

The 47-year-old said: “That’s another big loss. I look at the way we reacted after conceding to go a goal down and I want to be positive about the players.

“We played positive after that, we equalised and I don’t think at half time anybody would have expected us to lose 4 – 1.

“But then we lost another goal early in the second half and after that we made more chances but this was hard to take, hard to take and the end result is a 4 – 1 loss.”

The four they conceded tonight, including the opener from ex-Tottenham star Ivan Perisic, also means they have conceded three or more goals in three consecutive matches for the first time since September 1992.

A 3-0 defeat, again at home, to Nottingham Forest and a 3-0 mauling away at Manchester City have left them with just one win in eight domestic matches stretching back to Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Slot takes his shattered side to West Ham on Sunday trying to stop the rot.

The Dutchman stressed: “The only way to go is to go through now. What I mean with that is that we just have to face where we are in and fight really hard.

“It would be nice if we don’t every time get this knock of a goal we concede because it is not only conceding a goal it is also the feeling.

“At least the feeling I have and the players have the and probably the fans, that after 45 minutes you don’t expect to be 1-1 you expect to be up.”

The Hammers have only beaten Liverpool once since 2017, picking up a solo 3-2 win at the London Stadium in 2021.

Since then Liverpool have won eight of their last nine games against West Ham, but given their current run of form it is not out of the question for the relegation threatened east Londoners to pick up a shock win.
