‘Difficult to fathom’ – John Terry bemoans lack of opportunities after giving up dream of becoming manager

JOHN TERRY’S dream of managing former club Chelsea could be over after a lack of managing opportunities

Terry, 44, enjoyed a hugely successful career playing for The Blues, winning 17 trophies during his 19-year reign.

The former England captain retired from football in 2018 whilst at Aston Villa.

After retiring, he joined the coaching staff at Villa Park, becoming Dean Smiths assistant coach.

He left his post at Villa in 2021 believing he would find a senior management role.

He was briefly linked to a role at Newcastle in 2021, but nothing materialised and the job went to current boss Eddie Howe.

HOW MANY?

He had a short stint as assistant coach with Leicester City and later joined the backroom staff for Chelsea‘s academy in 2023, where he remains today.

His lack of opportunities serves as a stark contrast to the opportunities former teammates Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have had, considering the captaincy experience he has under his belt.

The 44-year-old captained Chelsea for 13 years and spent four years as Three Lions captain before having the title stripped and later reinstated.

He also served as captain for Aston Villa during his one-year tenure.

All his experience combined led Terry and fans to believe it was enough to land him a job so the lack of opportunities has left the former centre-back “baffled”.

The Chelsea legend revealed it may be time to give up on his long-lasting dream of managing Chelsea: “It’s my one last dream I have at the football club. I’ve done everything at Chelsea. And for me now, the one thing that is missing is being the manager of the football club.

“That’s why I went into coaching when I finished playing. My idea and dream was to learn my trade a bit.

“I went away and learnt my trade, I had some unbelievable times at Villa, I left Villa to be a number one, I thought I was ready. I think I’d be a really good number one, I enjoyed the coaching side of it.

“I could lead the dressing room and the team like I did [as a player]. That’s what I did for 22 years at the club. I know I’d be good at it.

“Will I ever get the chance? I’m not sure, without doing the other bits. But when people tell you you’ve not got the experience, it’s difficult to fathom.”

Terry previously claimed he had enough experience to land a senior role in a lower-league side when he departed Villa.

He told SunSport earlier this year he was “done in terms of coaching” but his yearning for a top job seems to linger as he went into a bitter rant at other players’ success as managers:

“When I went into Villa I got great experience under Dean Smith and we got promotion, which was incredible.

“As an assistant coach in the Premier League and the experience I’ve had as a player and an individual captain in both Chelsea and England, I thought that would be enough to get me a job.

“I didn’t even get a sniff. I had interviews and it was just ‘you have no experience’.

He added: “When I see some people managing today, it baffles me, it really does.”
