Man Utd legend’s son SENT-OFF for ref abuse after scoring in cup clash as forgotten Premier League star grabs hat-trick

THE son of a Manchester United icon saw red in a cup match against League One side Barnsley – after scoring for the Red Devils.

Jack Fletcher broke the deadlock in the EFL Trophy meeting between Man Utd U21s and Barnsley after just seven minutes, firing home a loose ball from around 18 yards out.

However, things took a turn for the Red Devils when David McGoldrick – who made his professional debut for Notts County before any of the starting United players were even born – levelled things up just before half-time.

The former Premier League star then struck twice in 11 minutes after the break to complete his hat-trick and put the hosts 3-2 up following an equaliser from Chido Obi.

It quickly went from bad to worse for United when Fletcher – the son of club legend Darren Fletcher – received a red card believed to be for dissent.

And with the Red Devils down to 10 players, Neil Farrugia and Jonathan Russell scored to make it 5-2 to Barnsley.

Fletcher’s twin brother, Tyler, also started for United as they fell to a defeat.

The result left Barnsley second in Group D with Man Utd U21s bottom.

Jack Fletcher scored twice when United beat the League One side in August last year.

With Barnsley 2-1 up, the 18-year-old turned the match on its head with two goals in quick succession – one of which was a wonder strike.

The midfielder unleashed a stunning half-volley from close to 35 yards out and the ball flew into the top-left corner, leaving the opposition players stunned.

Fletcher swapped the blue side of Manchester for the red when he joined from Manchester City two years ago.

He signed his first professional contract last April and is now expected to follow in the footsteps of his dad, Darren.

The 41-year-old made 342 first team appearances for the Red Devils during his 20-year stay at Old Trafford.
