Ex-IndyCar star Herta confirms F2 team for 2026

Ex-IndyCar star Herta confirms F2 team for 2026

Cadillac Formula 1 test driver Colton Herta will join Hitech for his highly-anticipated move from IndyCar to Formula 2 in 2026.

The 25-year-old will combine his newly-announced racing commitments with development work for Cadillac’s new grand prix team in the “simulator and at selected grands prix”.

The TWG-owned squad said that “the close alignment of the F2 and F1 schedules will enable seamless integration with Cadillac’s engineering and race operations, ensuring that every weekend contributes to his long-term growth”.

Last month, nine-time IndyCar race winner Herta dropped a bombshell by announcing his decision to step down from the American single-seater series with immediate effect to have a final crack at F1.

At the time, it was revealed that Herta will move to F2 to cross the 40-point threshold he needs for a superlicence, as well gaining more experience on tracks that are used on the F1 calendar.

Herta raced in Europe during the early years of his career, climbing as high as Euroformula Open in 2016, before joining the Road to Indy ladder in America. He went on to establish himself as a frontrunner in IndyCar, winning nine races and finishing runner-up to Alex Palou in the 2024 standings.

“I’m incredibly excited to officially be joining F2 for the 2026 Formula 2 season,” said Herta. “This is an amazing opportunity to develop my skills in European racing and to measure myself against some of the best young drivers in the world.

“Racing on the same weekends as Formula 1 will give me first-hand experience of that environment and help me grow as part of the Cadillac F1 family. I’m very grateful to Cadillac and Hitech for their trust and support and I can’t wait to get started.”

Cadillac previously made it clear that an F2 campaign won’t guarantee Herta an F1 seat in 2027, describing the undertaking as a “huge risk” for him.

“Colton has already shown exceptional talent and professionalism throughout his career,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports and Cadillac Formula 1 Team.

“His move into Formula 2 with Hitech is a natural and important next step in his development towards Formula 1. Competing in F2 will not only strengthen his racecraft in the European environment, but also allow for greater integration with our team as he continues to support us with his testing and simulator duties.

“We are proud of Colton’s commitment to success in European racing, and we look forward to seeing him take on this exciting new challenge with Hitech – a team with a proven history of success in junior categories.”

Hitech is currently second in the teams’ standing with the final two rounds to run in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Current Racing Bulls pair Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar graduated to F1 after racing for Hitech in F2.
