MANCHESTER UNITED’s trip to Anfield was always set to be the game of the weekend, with the historic rivals going toe-to-toe after their very different starts to the season.
But eagle-eyed fans noticed a moment in the stands that broke the palpable tension, and lifted the spirits of both fanbases.
Two club legends from the opposing sides were snapped sharing a genuine moment in the stands, far from the image of heated rivalry that fans have come to expect from the fixture.
Legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, 83, was watching the action from the stands at Anfield, flanked by Liverpool hero Sir Kenny Dalglish, 74.
The pair were sighted having a friendly chat and a laugh together at the half-time break, when the former offered Dalglish some of his Cadbury‘s chocolate buttons, which he was enjoying as a mid-game snack.
The fellow Scot seemed unsure about the offer at first, before eventually accepting and pinching a few from the bag, to the joy of Ferguson.

The scenes shared between two of the Prem’s biggest legends were undeniably heartwarming, though some fans took to social media to playfully claim that the pair should have been at odds with each other as their teams battled on the pitch.
One fan said: “Fergie and Dalglish sharing dairy milk buttons at half time. Games gone.”
Another concurred with their assessment, joking: “Fergie laughing and offering Kenny a chocolate button at Anfield, this is a dark day in the club’s modern history.”
Other fans were more straightforward in showing their appreciation for the wholesome moment, with a third fan chiming in: “Fergie offering Kenny Dal some of his chocolate Buttons is wholesome content.”
A fourth fan added: “Fergie offering Kenny some of his Cadbury chocolate is quality.”
United fans had plenty more moments to enjoy from the match, as they recovered from their poor start to the season to win away at Anfield for the first time in almost a decade.
Bryan Mbeumo got his side off to a flyer barely a minute into the game, but Liverpool hit back through Cody Gakpo late in the second half.
Harry Maguire proved to be the eventual difference maker as he rose highest in the 84th minute to head home and stun the hosts 2-1.
