Mason Greenwood scores four goals in Marseille win as ex-Man Utd ace equals record set by former England manager

MASON GREENWOOD fired Marseille to the top of the French league with a four-midable performance to equal a record set by an England legend.

The former Manchester United player scored four goals in a 6-2 demolition of Le Havre, who were left with ten men after a first half sending off of Gautier Lloris – younger brother of Hugo Lloris.

Greenwood, 24, scored a penalty following the red card in the 35th minute.

He then scored three more goals in the 67th and 72nd minutes to score his first career hat-trick before adding another in the 76th minute to take his tally up to an incredible four.

The four-goal haul saw him become the first Marseille player since Jean-Pierre Papin in 1991 to score four goals in one Ligue 1 game.

Greenwood also went level with ex-England player and manager Glenn Hoddle, who played for Monaco between 1987 and 1991, as the French top flight’s most prolific Englishman with 27 goals.

Speaking after the game, he told Ligue+: “I’m over the moon.

“I’d never even scored a hat-trick before, so four goals feels incredible.”

Greenwood went off the pitch in the 79th minute, and watched team-mates Robinio Vaz and Michael Amir Murillo add goals five and six in the game for the French giants.

The win coincided with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain drawing 3-3 with Strasbourg, meaning the win put the Phocaeans top of the league by a point.

Greenwood has scored seven goals and added four assists in 10 games in all competitions for his club this season.

He joined Marseille in 2024 from Man United in a deal worth up to £26.6m.

The move came after Greenwood faced serious charges of rape and assault, which were dropped in February 2023.

Greenwood did not play for United again once the allegations came to light, and moved to Getafe on loan in the 2023/24 season in a bid to reignite his football career.

United have a 50 per cent sell-on clause for Greenwood should another club want to sign the forward.
