Would Anyone Still Care if Fury and Joshua Finally Fought?

Would Anyone Still Care if Fury and Joshua Finally Fought?

Promoter Eddie Hearn is still hoping to put together the fight between the former Kings of Britain, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, in 2026.

America Checked Out Years Ago

While some UK fans are still eager to see the tired match-up, the U.S. public is put off by both and views them as overly rich and as symbols of artificially manufactured fighters who were never as good as they were marketed to be.

Interest in the Fury-Joshua fight has decayed a long time ago for many. It’s beyond the rot stage because the match has been talked about for over 10 years. Neither of them wanted to fight when it really mattered, when they were still in their 20s. The way they’ve both looked in the last three years, I see it as wretched for the match to happen now.

Why should we even care anymore?

The contest would have meant something five years ago when they were still at the top of their games, but neither of them is anywhere near top-level at this point. Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) has lost his last two fights and looks old for 37.

At this point, Joshua and Fury have been inactive, both dealing with devastating losses. I’m not sure which of them was

Their net worth is over $100 million each, and if they were to fight, they would both see their bank accounts swell by at least another $100 million.

Joshua’s expensive four-fight rebuild done by Hearn was a total failure, as he was obliterated in his last fight when he was matched against a semi-decent fighter, Daniel Dubois in September 2024.

Hearn’s Golden Pension Plan

Hearn is still interested in the fight, obviously. The question is whether Turki Alalshikh would want to pay the massive price tag to put the Fury vs. Joshua fight together. I don’t see why he would. It’s a fight that would only resonate with the UK boxing public, not worldwide. Americans don’t rate them, and I’m not sure that they ever did.

Fury’s best win is Klitschko, and the closest second best is Deontay Wilder. What does that say about ‘The Gypsy King’ Fury? He was never the real thing.

“The thing that AJ wants more than anything is to fight Tyson Fury,” said Eddie Hearn to Sky Sports.

“I think Turki Alalshikh is probably the only one who can make the Tyson Fury fight because both guys are going to want a huge amount of money. And the biggest fight in the sport is Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury,” said Hearn to ESPN.
