Steven Gerrard, 45, tipped for shock Wrexham move after snubbing Rangers job

STEVEN GERRARD has been tipped for a move to rising Welsh outfit Wrexham after shutting down interest in a return to Ibrox.

Gerrard began his career in senior management with Rangers in 2018, spending three years there and leading them to an unbeaten title-winning season in 2021.

He left the club that summer after being snapped up by Prem outfit Aston Villa, but found less luck in his new environment, being sacked less than a year after joining.

He would take a brief hiatus from management before joining Al Ettifaq for a forgettable stint in 2023, departing in January this year.

He was heavily linked with a return to Glasgow after the club sacked Russell Martin following an abysmal start to the season.

The Scot was sacked after just 123 days at the club, winning just one league fixture.

But Gerrard, 45, turned down the opportunity over the weekend.

Next in line, according to Betfair, is the Championship’s own Hollywood story, Wrexham.

The Welsh club rocketed up the league system after being taken over by actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in the National League in 2021.

Despite storming League One at the first time of asking, Wrexham have had a harder time of it in the Championship.

They have managed just two wins and 10 points from their nine games this season under incumbent manager Phil Parkinson.

For a club that leans on optics as much as Wrexham, Gerrard’s marketability could be an attractive prospect if they were to make a change on the touchline, leaving him 4/1 to make the move.

If a move to Wrexham doesn’t pan out, then the odds have the next favourites as fellow Championship clubs Norwich and Southampton.
