Emma Raducanu breaks silence after scary Wuhan Open scenes and admits she’s seen docs as star slams ‘fight for survival’

EMMA RADUCANU broke her silence after a scary ordeal at the Wuhan Open.

The British star, 22, was forced to retire from her first-round match at the tournament on Tuesday.

She struggled with dizziness in the stifling heat and intense humidity – which one player labelled a “fight for survival”.

Medics checked her blood pressure, temperature, pupils and heart rate during an on-court assessment.

But at 6-1 4-1 down against Ann Li, Raducanu decided she could not continue and terminated the match early in worrying scenes.

On Saturday, though, the former US Open champion provided a positive update to fans on Threads – suggesting she had been for regular check-ups.

She wrote: “Last day at the doctor’s in Wuhan… feeling better now.

“Shame I couldn’t continue there but thank you for the messages.”

Raducanu accompanied the post with a photo from the medical centre wearing a navy hoodie and sunglasses.

Plenty of fans replied with messages of support.

One said: “Stay safe and care full Emma.”

Another wrote: “I wish you the very best Emma, always.”

And a third added: “Use your time to relax.”

Raducanu, though, looks set to return to the court on the next instalment of the Asian swing of the tennis season.

She was due to be given a wildcard at the Ningbo Open.

However, withdrawals saw the world No30 get direct entry to the WTA 500 event.

She will take on wildcard Zhu Lin – the world No230 – in round one.

Raducanu was not the only high-profile player to struggle in the brutal conditions in China this week.

‘NO LONGER TENNIS’

Magdalena Frech blasted on social media: “In response to the avalanche of negative ratings and comments after the last game, I would like to inform you that sometimes I regret it, but I am not a machine.

“Although I have the impression that the organisers treat us like this when setting a game plan, playing three days in a row in extreme conditions, unfortunately it affected my health, which I always put first.

“Playing at 36 degrees with high smog, heated concrete and extreme humidity is acceptable if it does not happen every day.

“Unfortunately, the accumulation of this effort has consequences.

“I’ve never felt anything like it: overpowering lack of energy and constant struggle of negative thoughts that tried to stop my body from another effort.

“Hitting the ball into the court was a great challenge. It’s no longer a tennis match, just a fight for survival!”

At the Shanghai Masters, Jannik Sinner retired after suffering from severe cramps while Holger Rune asked: “Do you want a player to die on court?”

Novak Djokovic could barely move during parts of his shock semi-final defeat to Valentin Vacherot.

World No204 Vacherot then beat his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in a surprise final line-up to become the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 champion ever.

Rinderknech needed treatment during the match then fell off the stage during an emotional trophy ceremony.
