Carlo Ancelotti’s former team-mate, 82, breaks record for Italy’s oldest player after being subbed off in 10-0 defeat

LAMBERTO BORANGA has broken a record as he became Italy’s oldest player ever.

The veteran goalkeeper made his surprise return to the pitch after joining USD Trevana.

The Italian SEVENTH-TIER side opted to take a punt on the EIGHTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD despite his last professional game being in 2019.

He made his debut for Trevana against Foligno but his side went on to lose 10-0, and he was subbed off.

Boranga conceded five goals as his 26-year-old replacement, Maurizio Rossi, also struggled.

Speaking about his performance, Boranga said: “I made two mistakes. But I made three or four good saves.”

Highlights did show him still quick off the goal line to make a couple of decent stops.

Boranga started his career all the way back in 1961 and earned over 100 appearances in the Serie A.

He played for clubs such as Fiorentina and Parma but it was Cesena where he was a regular.

He starred for the Emilia-Romagna based side between 1973 and 1977, featuring 92 times in Serie A.

During his time at Parma in Serie B, his paths crossed with the now Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti was coming through the ranks ready to make his name in football, as Boranga was already 36.

Ancelotti has gone on to win multiple titles as a player and manager, while Boranga has enjoyed his own unique successes.

He first retired from football in 1993 at Bastardo before making his first comeback in 2009 at Ammeto.

Boranga played on until 2015 at Papiano before a three-year break before joining Marottese for a single season.

Between spells on the pitch, he has also graduated with a degree in medicine.

He was the physician at Bastardo before playing his only game for the club.

Boranga has previously spoken about his age and compared it to Luka Modric, 40, who is now at AC Milan.

Boranga told ANSA: “You can’t tell his age when he’s on the pitch.

“Modric has the sort of talent you don’t lose. And the age when you start being thought of as ‘old’ has risen.

‘Even at 50 you can be deemed young… but in a different way.”

Boranga has also enjoyed a career in master athletics.

He became a record breaker in that too as in 2012 he set the world record in triple jump.

He landed a jump of 10.75m in the M70 category and is the holder of the M65 record in long jump with an effort of 5.47m.

And he is not done yet as he is due at the European Masters Athletics Championship in Madeira this month.

He will be competing in the high jump.
