Why are matches in the WSL kicking off at 11:55am today?

FOOTBALL fans will get the chance to feast their eyes on four thrilling WSL matches – but eyebrows have been raised over the bizarre kick-off time.

Three points for Tottenham would see them go joint second with Manchester City who edged past Champions League winners Arsenal yesterday.

While Spurs’ London rivals West Ham hope to climb from the bottom of the charts when they play Aston Villa.

But besides waiting to see who will come out on top in these fixtures, fans are questioning why all four matches get underway at 11:55am BST.

SunSport has the answers.

Why are all the WSL matches kicking off at 11:55am today?

The 11:55am slot time prevents an overlap time for Sky who will be broadcasting Premier League matches at from 2pm.

Reports also suggest that the Women’s Super League is aiming to establish a new regular slot.

This was spurred on by extensive feedback from fans and clubs who are reportedly in favour of lunchtime matches.

It is also understood that there is a desire to trial more Friday night kick-offs regularly throughout the campaign which will help broadcasters and WSL bosses learn what slot works best to maximise both in-person attendances and television audiences.

WSL’s new broadcast deal

The 2025/26 campaign marks the first of a new five-year broadcast deal shared between Sky Sports and the BBC, which was agreed upon in October 2024.

Sky have been granted permission to show 90% of the live matches and the deal is reportedly worth approximately £65million across the duration of the five seasons.

Furthermore, production costs should take the broadcasters’ total investment in the WSL comfortably over £100m.
