Three-time FA Cup winners ‘set for points deduction after failing to pay players for five of last seven months’

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY are set to receive a points deduction after failing to pay their senior players before the end of September.

The Championship club have been in a financial crisis under owner Dejphon Chansiri.

It is the fifth month in the last seven that they have failed to pay wages on time.

According to Sky Sports, the club were given the deadline of midnight September 30th to make the payments or risk breaching the EFL’s financial regulations.

A punishment for charges brought by the EFL would be decided by an independent commission.

But it is understood that a points deduction would be the most likely outcome due to the number of similar breaches in recent months.

The club have made headlines on many occasions as a result of their financial issues.

The club were previously placed under transfer embargo for similar breaches of the EFL’s financial rules.

The former Premier League side’s season began under a cloud following the departure of manager Danny Rohl in late July.

There were questions in August over whether key players would strike as a result of the payment issues, leading the squad to release a statement committing themselves to working hard for the club.

The financial issues at Hillsborough have led fans to protest and even boycott their side’s matches, with the club’s own mascot protesting at the weekend to urge their chairman to sell the club.

Results have naturally fallen off amid the turmoil at the club, leaving them floundering in 22nd in the Championship, with just one win from their opening eight matches.
