Martin’s collarbone surgery successful but no timeline for recovery

Aprilia has announced that 2024 MotoGP champion Jorge Martin underwent surgery on the collarbone that he broke during a crash in the Japanese Grand Prix sprint.

The operation was carried out on Tuesday at Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona by a team headed by renowned specialist Dr. Xavier Mir.

Aprilia said that doctors will continue to monitor Martin’s recovery in the coming days before determining a timeline for his return to action.

However, as expected, the Spaniard will sit out this weekend’s Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika.

A replacement for Martin is yet to be announced.

“Surgery on Jorge Martin’s right collarbone has been successfully completed,” Aprilia said in a statement.

“Following a crash in the sprint at Motegi, the Spanish rider had suffered a displaced fracture of the right collarbone. On Sunday, Jorge returned to Spain to undergo surgery for the reduction and fixation of the fracture, which was carried out on Tuesday morning at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus by the medical team led by Dr Xavier Mir.

“Recovery time will be assessed in the coming days depending on his progression following the surgery. As permitted by the regulations, Martín will not be replaced for the Indonesian GP.”

Martin made a great launch from 17th on the grid in the sprint race at Motegi, but carried too much speed into the corner and crashed, taking his team-mate Marco Bezzecchi with him.

He was diagnosed with a displaced fracture in his right collarbone following scans at the medical centre. He was subsequently flown to a nearby hospital for further checks, where the injury was confirmed.

Martin briefly returned to the track on Saturday evening, where Aprilia held a clear-the-air meeting between its two factory riders, before flying back to Spain on Sunday.

The surgery was initially scheduled in Barcelona on Monday before being pushed back to Tuesday.
