Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis says he doesn’t have Terence Crawford among his Mount Rushmore of boxing’s all-time greats.
Crawford’s Self-Made Mount Rushmore Campaign
Like movie actors of the past who have shamelessly campaigned for Oscar awards, Crawford has undertaken a campaign of his own, repeatedly stating that he belongs among the four all-time greats on the Mount Rushmore of boxing.
Unfortunately, Crawford’s credentials are insufficient for him to gain entry to that exclusive country club-like establishment. Only the upper crust of boxing can be part of that club. They can’t just let anyone in that have accomplished only the bare minimum in their careers.
The Legends Boots Ranks Above Crawford
The former IBF and WBA welterweight champion Ennis has fighters with arguably better credentials than Crawford’s:
- Sugar Ray Leonard
- Roy Jones Jr.
- Pernell Whitaker
- James Toney
“My opinion is, I like Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather, and Pernell Whitaker. I’m liking Sugar Ray Leonard. I’m watching a little bit of Sugar Ray Leonard and James Toney. They’re my top guys that I’ve been watching,” said Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to YSM Sports Media when asked if he believes Terence Crawford deserves to be placed on the Mount Rushmore of boxing following his win over Canelo Alvarez on September 13.
Were Spence and Canelo Already Finished?
It’s understandable why ‘Boots’ Ennis doesn’t include Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) in his Mount Rushmore of boxing because his only notable wins have mental asterisks next to them against Canelo Alvarez and Errol Spence. Fans viewed them as being shells of their former selves at the time Terence fought them.
What Crawford Must Do at 168 and 175
For Crawford to make it among the top 4 all-time greats, he would have to take major risks rapidly with the time he has left in his career. In other words, make a late surge by fighting the elite at 168 and 175 against these types of fighters:
- David Benavidez
- Dmitry Bivol
- Artur Beterbiev
- Christian Mbilli
- Jaron Ennis
- Lester Martinez
- Jai Opetaia
