Joseph Diaz vs. Floyd Schofield: Oscar De La Hoya Says November 8 Will Reveal If ‘Kid Austin’ Is the Real Deal

Oscar De La Hoya says he expects Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz to give Floyd Schofield a real test on November 8th in their 10-round lightweight co-feature fight on DAZN at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Golden Boy promoter De La Hoya states that he sees the 23-year-old Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) as a “superstar.” He just hasn’t had the chance yet to show what he’s capable of doing.

Can Schofield Handle Veteran Pressure?

The former IBF super featherweight champion Diaz (34-8-1, 15 KOs) turned in one of his best performances in the last four years in his narrow 10-round unanimous decision loss to former two-time 140-lb champion Regis Prograis on August 2, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois. He staggered Prograis several times in the fight despite losing.

Superstar Potential on the Line

“Joseph Diaz had a tremendous performance against Regis Prograis. It’s going to be a tough challenge for ‘Kid.’ If ‘Kid’ goes out there like he did against Tevin Farmer, we have a superstar on our hands. But ‘JoJo’ is no easy task,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya to Golden Boy Boxing.

“‘Kid Austin,’ prepare yourself. Get ready because ‘JoJo’ is coming after you. I’m telling you right now, we have a superstar in ‘Kid Austin,’” said De La Hoya.

It’s still too early to know if Schofield is going to become anything other than a contender. Although he looked great in his last fight, knocking out former IBF super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer in the first round on June 28, 2025, he was dealing with a 35-year-old fighter.

Moreover, Farmer was coming off back-to-back grueling fights that went the distance against William Zepeda. Tevin took a lot of punishment in those fights, which he lost by a pair of decisions. It wasn’t the ideal situation for Farmer to go straight into a battle against Schofield just three months after losing a 12-round unanimous decision to Zepeda on March 29, 2025, in Cancun, Mexico.

Gauging Schofield’s True Talent

Perhaps an accurate gauge of Schofield’s talent was his performance against Rene Tellez Giron on November 2, 2024. He couldn’t do much against Giron, was dropped in the 11th, and forced to go the 12-round distance to win a decision.

We would have known how good Schofield is by now if he hadn’t pulled out of his fight against Shakur Stevenson earlier this year on February 22, 2025. Schofield had food poisoning.
