England set to bring back popular feature on World Cup kit after 13-year absence

ENGLAND players will don a gold star for the first time in 13 years at the 2026 World Cup.

Kit manufacturers Nike have changed the colour of the symbol that sits above the Three Lions badge to mark England’s 1966 World Cup win.

Recent kits have featured a silver or white star which blends in with the nation’s signature white home colours.

The white star which sat above England’s badge at the last major tournament – Euro 2024 – was barely visible.

Nike sparked controversy with that kit design by including a multi-coloured take on the St George’s Flag on the back of the collar.

Even Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer piled in on Nike and the FA for ditching the traditional red and white flag.

But England’s 2026 World Cup kit seems set to please the masses.

The last time England players sported a gold star was in 2013, when a special kit commemorating the FA’s 150th anniversary was commissioned.

The year prior, at Euro 2012, England’s white home kit featured a red star above the Three Lions badge.

Silver and white stars have not been a major point of contention among supporters in recent years.

But reverting back to gold is sure to be welcomed.

Next year’s tournament will mark the 60th anniversary of England’s one and only World Cup victory.

The stars above the badges on the shirts of rival nations like France and Brazil traditionally appear in colours that stand out.

England will soon join them with a new strip which also features red trim and the words ‘Happy and Glorious’ written inside the collar.
